At 10:23 PM this evening, the telephone rang. Not only was it weird that someone was calling that late, but when I checked the caller ID, it wasn't a wrong number like I anticipated, it was actually a work colleague calling. I almost didn't pick up the phone, but then did, and then had a conversation that went something like this:
Colleague: "Hi, Ranae?"
Me: "Yeah?"
Colleague: "Um, I don't know if you've heard, but a crane crashed into our office building tonight, and it hit the 6th and 7th floors [which are the floors of our office], so just wanted to let you know that you likely won't be able to get into the office tomorrow."
Me: "SHUT UP! You are lying. This isn't real."
Colleague: "No, no -- it really happened at around 7:15 PM tonight."
Me: "Oh my god! Is everyone OK?"
Colleague: "Yeah, there were a few people in the office at that time, but everyone is fine. They were obviously pretty shaken up, but they are all OK and accounted for. But, apparently someone in a nearby apartment building did die when the crane crashed into his apartment."
Apparently our servers still work (I think they are located in our Portland office), so I will still be able to log into the network and work from home tomorrow, but how random is it that a crane crashes into your office building? The stories will likely continue to come in, but some of the current coverage is in the Seattle Times and on KOMO-TV. The building that is really crushed is next door to the Civica Office Commons, my office building; I can't tell from the pictures or stories how badly damaged our building is, other than to read that it has been "red-tagged" and isn't currently safe to be occupied. The local Bellevue police and fire departments are also conducting a search and rescue mission in the damaged building to ensure there are no people trapped. Also interesting was that the crane operator was in the crane as it crashed, and he rode it all the way down. He is injured, but expected to make it through fine.
Will let you know as I get more details!
